What are the criteria to choose a scientific journal to publish your well-deserved article?

We start by aiming for the highest Impact factor. Although it is worth considering how long you want your article to be. As an example PRX does not have such a strict limitation on number of pages as PRL has.

Typically scientists send their article a bit to a journal higher in ‘hierarchy’ and if it gets rejected editors can suggest the journal from the same publishing group. As an example PRL could refer to send to PRA or other specialized journal in APS group.
